Biography
Phil Kember’s working life began as a professional musician at the age of 15. Although music was and is a vital part of his life, in 1996 he turned to photography as the primary way to express his creative life. Initially working in color, he was soon attracted to the work of traditional black and white photographers such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston. Drawn to the possibilities and challenges of large format camera work, the 8×10 camera soon became his instrument of choice.
Phil Kember adheres strictly to the tradition of what he refers to as classical photography, silver gelatin prints produced by hand in is own darkroom.
In addition to being a part of many photographic collections, Phil’s work has been featured in numerous publications such as the Economist, National Geographic as well as being featured in Oregon, Nevada and national PBS TV broadcasts. Sky TV (Great Britain) has also featured his work.
